Music in all forms and all expressions of it - from listening, to dancing, to singing, to playing an instrument - has inspired me greatly for as long as I can remember. It feels to me like there is a place somewhere between heaven and earth that music transports me to.

I have read that music is non-linear and multi-dimensional, which makes a lot of sense to me. It explains, in part, why music is so far beyond the realm and the analyses and the constraints of the physical plane.

I was blessed to have parents with a love of music and a mother and grandmother who played piano wonderfully, and to have grown up surrounded by music. It started with a pianola, which always fascinated and delighted me as a child. In the '70's, my sister and I loved playing 'air violin' to the 'Fists of Fury' sound track (our own violin playing skills were far less advanced!), and I enjoyed belting out Beatles numbers and other favourites on keyboards. Dancing around the lounge room to very loud music was a huge joy in my teens (a joy I continue to enjoy to this day - listening to everything you could imagine, from Led Zeppelin to Vivaldi, from Bocelli to Bjork, from Supertramp to Sting).

Singing in choirs and around campfires, having music gatherings in my home, attending African drumming classes, passionately sharing my favourite music with anyone (and even managing a band once for a short while!) ...music forms a huge part of my love of life. And now, with my wonderful partner filling the air with flutes every day and having the hang and harp and Alchemy bowls to caress my ears and heart in any given moment of my choosing, and an ever-deepening exploration of existence and our purpose here, I feel beyond blessed!

I could rave for pages about the music I love, but with my deeper understanding of vibration as healing and the divine beauty and power that is created when artists express themselves from a place of heart rather than ego, I will just focus on sharing a few that I believe transcend the mainstream and that have inspired me and touched my heart deeply.

Sacred Earth

Ethereal, deeply peaceful, divine music that is spreading around the world and touching all.

Peruquois (also known as 'the Singing Woman')

What she pulls up from out of the earth with her voice in this sacred music is beyond belief

Deepak Chopra & Friends - 'A Gift of Love' & 'A Gift of Love II - Poetry of Rumi and Tagore poetry

The words of these metaphysical poets put to music in a most transcendental way - deeply, deeply, enchanting and moving.

Bobby Flynn

A young, conscious musician whose time is definitely coming - who reminds us all of the exquisite beauty of gentleness and whose voice reaches into your very core and caresses it with kid gloves. Tears flow freely from me in his deepest, most honest and vulnerable songs.

Sting

I could rave ad infinitum, but all I will say to those who are not that into his music is, please look more deeply into the man, and for a beautiful experience please watch the DVD called 'All This Time' - making sure to watch the documentary first and then the concert, or it won't make sense. He also beautifully expresses that music 'frames the silence'.

Tori Amos

With Cherokee Indian blood and a beautiful Spiritual presence, Tori makes alternative music of intense beauty that often illicits a strong emotional response (She's one of the ones who makes me cry the most :o). She has described the music she writes as coming to her in sonic waves.

Bjork

Many don't get it with her, and I didn't to start with - I disliked her music intensely initially, now she's one of my favourites! She is unique, very avant garde, very talented (writes beautiful orchestral compositions as well), very instinctive, very intuitive and  very deep, with intelligent lyrics. A good starting place with her music would be 'Vespertine'.  This is definitely alternative music - some of it is soft and beautiful, some is electronic and trip hop, so it doesn't all work for me but I appreciate her versatility and her willingness to explore...and stick to the style of music she has created that really speaks to me and moves me.

Gabrielle Hart

My soul sister and dear friend whose divine singing with her beyond amazing Alchemy Crystal bowls is such a gift to the world! It's like taking a journey home. A beautiful aid to the deepest relaxation and meditations. We are very blessed to now own three of her bowls, but she has many more!

The growing inspiration in playing harmonising music I dedicate to my spiritual teacher Sri Chinmoy, who awakened my heart to the beauty of spiritual music as a sublime expression of universal Consciousness. I humbly offer through my playing, that which spontaneously arises  from my meditative practice. An inspired musical journey, returning the the listener to the peaceful essence of their Being: the compassion, love and joy of their spiritual heart.

"If we can play or hear soulful music, the power of our meditation increases. Soulful music adds to our aspiration. The supreme duty of a musician is to meditate before he creates something, and while creating, to be in a very contemplative, divine mood. Music can change our consciousness provided it is music that comes from the heart and enters into the listener's heart. Music is the expansion of the unlimited Reality. The source of music is silence. Music means Self-expansion and oneness."
                                                        Sri Chinmoy

The delight of playing I owe to three people...my  partner Maia and my good friend (spiritual brother), Matt Shooting Star of Spirit Song Flutes, and my spiritual teacher, Sri Chinmoy. All have had profound influences on my musical journey.

Maia, for her support and encouragement, and for her open-hearted offering to play her 'artpiece' - the hang. The instrument's resonance is so captivating, enchanting, uplifting and expansive, sounding it is a meditation.

Matt, for being the skilled craftsman he is, devotedly bringing the Spirit of the Native American Indians into the Native American Indian flutes he lovingly crafts.

There are many beautiful, profound and inspiring music quotes that explore what music is and how it touches us.

We have collected some of them to share with you, and we invite you to enjoy them...but not only to enjoy them. To contemplate them, to feel them, to sit in stillness with them.

I am especially blessed to have been immersed in spiritual music in my meditative practice. I have experienced the delight and transformative energy of the music played at Sri Chinmoy's Peace Concerts, I am brought to inner stillness listening to his musical improvisations and singing his devotional songs.

Sri Chinmoy composed and played with spontaneous freedom, not bound by musical disciplines or practices. His many hundreds of international concerts moved audiences to deep stillness and peace - a powerful awakening to their real essence.

Sri Chinmoy's music soothes the restless mind, leaving it immersed in an ocean of stillness and serene peace. In that state of deep calm you are the witness of a deeper Self - embraced by the infinite, unconditional love and joy. A timeless inner realm of freedom that can inspire, nourish, energise, motivate or nurture...or simply leave you resting in state of loving oneness.

Back in my early teens I enjoyed listening to the great classical Italian operas. Lying in front of my parents' stereogram, I was captivated and held silent as my heart flew with the soaring voices of the great tenors and sopranos.

Then during my 20's and 30's I was a  wilderness photographer. I remember spending many hours sitting and listening while I photographed - sometimes it would be the soothing sounds of a flowing creek, other times the sound of the wind, then the movements of animals or the songs of the birds. Other times the roar of ocean waves crashing up against a cliff face, or the soothing sounds of the waves as they break onto the shoreline. Then the pristine silence of the dawn or sunset as seen from mountain summits, or felt at the heart of a great desert, or experienced on a calm ocean, or witnessed while sitting around an open camp-fire.

Try to imagine the music created as a flower bud opens, or in the flight of a butterfly, or as air flows across the wings of an eagle in flight. There are music-vibrations surrounding and permeating us, many in perfect harmony with our own inner resonance, raising us in sublime joy to a greater connectedness with Spirit. If you had not been aware of these before, you now have a new world to appreciate in the subtleties and exquisite beauty of the multitude of choruses and symphonies that nurture and embrace us.

The great sages and yogis of India understood that cosmic vibrations (music) rises out the cosmic silence, then returns to that silence. Like the cresting waves that roll across the oceans, which rise from the silent depths then recede, to rise again in a continuous, uninterrupted and timeless free-flowing symphonic surge.

Try also to be aware that the vibration of sound not only affects your cellular structure, it also resonates within the etheric body. In India the mantra AUM is said to be the cosmic vibration from which all matter and life arises. It resonates as a continuous frequency throughout all withtin the universe.

As Sri Chinmoy says, " Each individual has his own music, each movement has its own music, each action has its own music, each time we breathe in and breathe out, there is music".
